Lab2Market

Lab2Market (L2M) is a suite of national programs that support researchers in exploring how their innovative ideas can translate into real-world impact and find commercial success. Through structured, practice-based programming, participants develop the skills, tools, and perspectives needed to assess opportunities, test ideas, and move beyond traditional academic contexts.

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is the first and currently the only art and design university in the national L2M network and participates in the Pacific Hub co-led by UBC and SFU.

Lab2Market is structured as a pathway of programs that support different stages of development, beginning with Validate Foundations (a 3-day introductory program) and progressing to more advanced programs such as Validate, Launch, and Build. Together, these programs support participants in moving from early exploration to validated opportunities and potential implementation.

Lab2Market programs are free of cost and open to all researchers (Undergrads, Masters, Ph.D., and Postdocs) and faculty from all disciplines in Canada. Please note eligibility may vary slightly depending on the cohort being offered.

At ECU, Lab2Market program delivery is adapted to support creative, design-led, and interdisciplinary practices. Participants engage in facilitated sessions, hands-on exercises, and peer discussions, applying concepts directly to their own ideas or projects. L2M programs are open to students, faculty, researchers, and recent ECU alumni who are curious about extending the reach of their work—whether through social impact, industry collaboration, or entrepreneurial pathways. No prior experience in business or commercialization is required for participation.
