Cemre Demiralp, Laura Kozak to Receive Awards in 2021
Shumka Centre is thrilled to announce that team members Cemre Demiralp and Laura Kozak have both received awards from Emily Carr University of Art + Design for their contributions in 2021.
Cemre Demiralp is the recipient of the 2021 Emily Carr University Staff Excellence Award for Achievement. Launched by Human Resources in 2020, this peer-nominated prize recognizes staff for distinguished service and tireless effort in their service to fellow community members and the university. She was recognized for consistently exceeding all expectations of her role at ECU, for her work creating a more inclusive environment for transgender students, and for her work with international students. In particular, Cemre’s nominators commended her for “her contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion, Indigeneity, decolonization and leadership, and community well-being, health and safety.” Cemre shares the Staff Excellence Awards with colleague Emma Sommers, who received the 2021 Staff Excellence Award for Distinguished Service to commemorate her long-term contributions to the betterment of the University. Laura Kozak is one of the two non-regular faculty members to share the Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence in 2021. Laura shares this award with Magnolia Pauker, who teaches at the Faculty of Culture + Community. The Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes excellence in teaching practice including a deep knowledge and current understanding of subject matter, enthusiasm for teaching, excellent organization and communication skills, and a commitment to students’ progress and growth and a positive learning experience. The Award also recognizes excellence in one or more of the following areas: the scholarship of Teaching and Learning, innovations in teaching and learning, building Emily Carr as a learning community, inspiring social responsibility, developing interdisciplinary approaches, curriculum development, and modeling of collegiality. The Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence was created through the establishment of an endowment generously donated by former Board Member, Bob Rennie.
